Conservationists in Uganda are today marking World Snake Day with renewed calls for the protection and preservation of all snake species.

The day aims at increasing awareness regarding the over 3,500 snake species that exist across the globe.

Edith Kabesiime, the wildlife campaign manager at World Animal Protect, says these reptiles are often not given the recognition they deserve because of the bad reputation they earned over the years yet not all species are harmful.

She thus joins other conservationists in highlighting the need for the protection of all snake species as an important aspect of protecting biodiversity and ecology in Uganda.
