As the IGG continues to crack the whip, three engineers of the ministry of works have this afternoon been charged in Court over alleged charges of abuse of office.
The three include the chief engineer Peter Kikuyo, Engineer Benard Mwerinde, and Eng. Waiswa Naluwayilo.
The engineers have been charged with abuse of office and causing financial loss.
According the charge sheet by the Inspector General of Government, the engineers approved unlawfully the payment of extra 3.5 billion shillings for street lighting ahead of the 2007 Common Wealth Heads of Government meeting.
The IGG says the money was paid to Dott Services and Seyani brothers without following due procedure and accuses the engineers of causing the government deliberate loss.
The chief magistrate in the Anti-Corruption Court Irene Akwankwasa has granted all the three 15 million shillings bail cash and their sureties bonded 500 million shillings not cash.
They have also been directed to deposit their passports before Court and land titles worth at least 500 million Shillings each.
The prosecutor in the IGG’s office Thomas Okoth told Court that investigations into the matter are almost complete, asking for only 2weeks to wind up.
The case has been adjourned until 27th July 2011.
This the second time the IGG is prosecuting officials from the ministry of works, the first being Eng. Sam Bagonza who was sentenced to five years in jail last year over abuse of office and causing financial loss, also connected to CHOGM expenditure.
