A section of the NRA liberation war veterans in Luweero District says that heroes day celebrations remind them of a worthless sacrifice after the government failed to honor a promise to clear the outstanding gratuities and benefits.
According to Mr Kategaya many of the veterans are angry that they have been made to fill forms detailing all their respective particulars including opening up bank accounts in particular banks but the efforts are still fruitless.
Kamira Subcounty has more than 1300 war veterans divided into 4 categories depending on the type of contribution and participation in the bush war struggle but many of these veterans have never been paid, Mr Kategaya said.
We have the civilian veterans, demobilized soldiers who were not approved by UPDF, the Piganagi (fighters), veterans who acted as informers and scouts and those who were mobilizing for food among other resources.
These people have turned their eyes on some us yet we are equally ignorant about what is taking place at the higher offices. We appeal to the overall Commander Gen Yoweri Museveni to intervene, Mr Kategaya said.
Kategaya joined the NRA guerrilla force in 1982 at Katagwe village in Kamira Subcounty after being recruited by a group of elders in Kamira Subcounty.
