The Aruu North by-election has been marred by election violence from both the ruling NRM and the opposition Forum for Democratic Change.
The tight race is between NRM’s James Kidega and Lucy Aciro, an independent but FDC leaning candidate.
The situation turned chaotic this afternoon with supporters of the two candidates attacking each other.
The first incident was in Atanga Sub County where the FDC mobilizer, Kerry Komakech and Aciro’s agent identified as Walter Oringa were attacked by suspected NRM supporters.
The duo was beaten severely and admitted at Atanga Health III for medical treatment.
A case of assault has been reported at Angagura police station.
The Electoral Commission Spokesperson Jotham Taremwa has visited the victims in hospital and condemned the violent action, promising to up the matter.
Dr. Kenneth Omona, the Deputy NRM treasurer who is also in Aruu, says his party promotes peaceful election and promised to investigate the matter and take appropriate disciplinary action against culprits.
In Angagura Sub County, the LCI Chairperson Francis Oryema and wife were also beaten up while in the garden in Kalawiny village for wearing NRM T-shirts.
According to Dr. Omona the victims are also admitted at Angagura Health Centre III, but plans are underway to have them transferred to Lacor Hospital for further treatment.
The Electoral Commission District Registrar Joseph Omona says calm has now been restored with the help of police.
Vote counting is expected to commence shortly.
