The Uganda Wildlife Authority has welcomed the conviction of a man who conned tourists.

This comes after the Chief Magistrates Court in Entebbe presided over by Her Worship Stella Akwong convicted and sentenced Godfrey Paul Mpamu to 36 months in jail and payment of UGX 19.8M for the offense of obtaining money by false pretense.

Mpamu was arrested by police on 10th October and arraigned in court on 15th October for defrauding a group of tourists Euros 3,000 and the US $ 2,000 with a promise to secure for them Gorilla tracking permits in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

Mpamu however disappeared with the money and abandoned them in motor vehicle reg. No UBE 360R which he had used to transport them to the park. He has been on remand at Kitalaya until he was sentenced yesterday.

Uganda Wildlife Authority’s executive director Sam Mwanda warned the public against participation in criminal activities of defrauding tourists adding that abandoning tourists in the park not only puts the authority in an embarrassing situation but also dents the image of destination Uganda.
