The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health Dr. Dian Atwine has emphasized the need to use Mothers’ Day celebrations to increase awareness about Preeclampsia, one of the leading causes of maternal deaths in Uganda.
Preeclampsia is a condition characterized by high blood pressure during pregnancy.
In her Mothers’ Day message, Dr Atwine says this day should among other things; be used to educate mothers to ensure regular antenatal check-ups, adopt a healthy lifestyle.
This, she says will enable mothers prioritize early detection and care for safer pregnancies.
“Join us this crucial effort as we embark on ten days of activism preeclampsia”, said Dr Atwine in a statement.
Mother’s Day is a celebration honoring the mother of the family or individual, as well as motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society.
It is celebrated on different days in many parts of the world, most commonly in March or May.
In Uganda it is celebrated every second Sunday of May.
