Usafi market vendors are living in fear of losing their market to unscrupulous people.
The traders through their chairman Ssalongo Kagolo claim that the management of the market has started charging them extra money in addition to the Sh 6,000 monthly fees.
Kagolo says vendors with shops and lockups were told to pay between 800,000shs and 1million while the foods section that has about 90 vendors have been given five days to vacate the market if they don’t pay 4million.
They were plans for Kampala Capital City Authority(KCCA) to take over the market at a cost sh37.9b this financial year, but according to the authority deputy spokesperson Robert Kalumba, this is yet to materialize.
