The opposition Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) has expressed its support for the reinstatement of the Special Branch Unit within the Uganda Police Force.
This decision was endorsed at the 27th Police Council Meeting, held at Police Headquarters in Naguru on Thursday, November 23, 2023.
The Special Branch Unit was established in the 1950s during a period of heightened political activism, marked by demonstrations, political rallies, and the growing movement for decolonization and independence. The need arose to gather intelligence on individuals and groups involved in these activities. This required specialized training for officers, many of whom were sent overseas for further education.
However, in August 2007, the Special Branch was disbanded, with its responsibilities transferred to the Internal Security Organization (ISO).
Addressing the media at the party’s headquarters in Kampala, UPC spokesperson Ms Sharon Oyat emphasized the crucial role the unit plays in intelligence gathering and community security.
She expressed optimism that the revival of the Special Branch will contribute to reducing crime rates and election violence.
UPC also urged the government to clearly define the role of the Police Special Branch in intelligence work to prevent interference from other security agencies.
