The Uganda People’s congress has described the Shs10 billion meant to support political parties as a legitimate fund from government.
The electoral commission on Monday announced the release of this money to political parties according to their representation in parliament with the ruling NRM receiving 90% of the Sh.10bn.
The party spokesperson David Lucima says unlike some parties that have rejected it, UPC will receive this money and use it to develop the party structures since it’s provided for in the constitution.
Lukima however warns the ruling NRM party against using the money as a ploy to draw more money from the treasury.
With 3.09% representation in parliament, the UPC has been allocated Shs 309m out of the 10 bn.
Meanwhile, David Pulkol has been nominated to run for the UPC party presidency.
Pulkol and Jimmy Akena have been opposed to the election road map set by the party president Olara Otunu accusing him of occupying the office illegally.
The party spokesperson Lucima says the electoral commission chairperson Andrew Nyote has cleared Pulkol together with six others after they met the necessary requirements.
According to the set road map the seven candidates will start campaigning on 23rd May – 11th June ahead of the delegate’s conference and elections set for June 12th.
