The Uganda National Roads Authority has been summoned to defend itself on allegations that it failed to protect a vehicle which was on a ferry and fall into river Nile.

Business man Nathan Odaret sued UNRA seeking damages for failure to maintain proper and secure docking facilities at Laropi Ferry landing site on River Nile that caused his vehicle USUZU carrying building materials to involve in an accident.

He says in November 2010 while his vehicle was driven from Mbale transporting an assortment of building materials was loaded by UNRA agents on a ferry for crossing to Ajumani-Moyo.

But upon crossing the river and on docking the ferry on the other side of the river at Laropi landing site his driver was directed by UNRA agents to drive off the ferry rump/deck and to the land surface onto the roadway.

However before the driver of USUZU could fully disembarked on the other side of the river bank and the front tires were still on the ferry deck, the ferry swayed off midway and the vehicle slide off the ferry and plunge into the river Nile.

The vehicle screen and grills were shattered; guard bars, chassis, body parts, interior, battery and electrical installations all got spoiled.

His is accusing UNRA for failure to ensure that the ferry was securely docked and to ensure that his vehicle that his vehicles exit is safe which caused him loss.

According to the documents signed by High Court deputy registrar Festo Nsenga, UNRA has been given fifteen days within which to defend itself on the said allegations against it.
