UN responds to Museveni

The United Nations has denounced the anti homosexuality law, hours after President Museveni penned his signature to the law.

In a statement issued this afternoon, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay says the law would institutionalise discrimination against lesbians, gay, bisexual and transgender people and could encourage harassment and violence against them.

The law imposes a life sentence for homosexuals.

Pillay says that Uganda is obliged by the constitution and international law, to respect the rights of all individuals and to protect them from discrimination and violence.

She further notes that with the HIV infection rate rising in Uganda, the law will have a negative impact on efforts to prevent and treat people living with HIV, and undermine the government’s commitment to non-discriminatory access to healthcare.
