Electricity distribution company UMEME is considering phasing out the post-paid billing system and replace it with the prepaid one.

This system requires that the customer makes advance payment to get units before the electricity can be used and if the available units are exhausted, then the supply would be cut off automatically.

UMEME board chairman Patrick Bitature says the system is intended to streamline payment of electricity bills in the country.

He says the company in due course will also phase out UMEME cash out lets.

Currently about 513, 000 customers are connected on the power grid out of which, 22, 000 are already using the pre-paid metering system – with the company targeting to have at least 160,000 more by the end of 2014.
