Large scale manufacturers could have reason to smile if proposals to have electricity tariffs are approved by government.

Electricity distribution company, UMEME, in its annual tariff review for 2015 application proposes that large industrial consumers should pay Shs 306.7 per unit, down from Shs308.5 which they currently pay.

UMEME’s General Manager Corporate and regulatory affairs, Sam Zimbe says the proposal is informed by the company’s revenue requirements for 2015.

Zimbe however says retail tariff for domestic consumers be increased from 518.7 shillings to sh 520.7  per unit, while tariffs for commercial consumers be increased from Shs477.4up from Shs472.5.

He adds that tariff for street lighting be reduced from Shs486.9 to Shs480.6 per unit, which could result into a reduction of some municipalities and the city authority’s monthly bills for street lighting.
