The Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) on Monday urged relevant government authorities to swiftly handle detained Dr. Kizza Besigye’s remaining judicial processes, in line with the Supreme Court decision to block the trial of civilians in military courts. Besigye was rushed from Luzira prison to a private clinic in Kampala, his lawyer said on Sunday.
“He was not ready to meet us but he eventually agreed to meet my team of two people. He did not talk to them as such, however, when they requested to pray with him, he agreed to pray with them,” UHRC Chairperson Mariam Wangadya told KFM.
“According to the report they gave me, he was weak physically. The processes to actualize the Supreme Court judgment should be expedited and he should be taken to the proper court,” she added.
She made the remarks in light of veteran politician Dr. Kizza Besigye’s continued detention, pending trial on national security-related charges.
Dr. Besigye and his colleague, Hajji Obeid Lutale, face three counts of unlawful possession of two pistols and eight rounds of ammunition, allegedly found in their possession upon their arrest at Riverside Apartments in Kenya on November 16, 2024.
The army prosecution maintains that firearms and ammunition are the exclusive domain of the armed forces.
The duo has been on remand since November 20, 2024.
