Ugandans yearn for affordable clean cooking energy

By Benjamin Benjamin

Lack of awareness and limited access to affordable credit have been cited as some of the challenges hampering the adoption of clean cooking technologies.

Over 90 percent of the country’s population is currently relying on biomas fuel for cooking which situation has increased pressure on the natural resources.

Speaking during a clean cooking stakeholders consultative workshop on review of the renewable energy policy, Charles Atuhe, a consulant on clean cooking noted that in addition to the above challenges, lack of standards on energy efficient technologies has also undermined adoption of the same

He now recommends among other things standardization of the clean cooking technologies and promotion of sustainable charcoal production and utilization

The findings of the consultant commissioned by the Uganda National Alliance on Clean Cooking (UNACC) are to be compiled in a policy brief to be shared with the ministry of energy for consideration during review of the national renewable energy policy.
