By Ben Jumbe:
The Directorate of Immigration and Citizenship Control early last month announced a shortage of ordinary passport booklets, promising that new stock would be in the country in a months’ time.
However, speaking the Internal Affairs Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Benon Mutambi, says the earliest the consignment will be here is end of July.
The ministry ordered for at least 150, 000, a figure, which according to its planning estimates covers a year’s demand.
Dr Mutambi attributes the current shortage to poor planning.
As a result of the shortage, the government has restricted issuance of ordinary passports to Ugandans who have to travel abroad for treatment.
