Former Local government Permanent Secretary John Kashaka has been sentenced to 10 years and 10 days for causing government a Sh4 billion loss in a botched bicycle deal.

According to the sentence passed by Justice Catherine Bamugemereire of the Anti-Corruption Court, Kashaka is also barred from holding any public office.

He and five others were earlier convicted for embezzling the money that was meant to purchase 70,000 bicycles meant for LCs and parish chiefs to ease their work.

The principal accountant Henry Bamutura has also been handed 10 years and 10 days for having paid the said money to a ghost company AMAN Industrial Tools and Equipment LTD (AITEL).

While Sam Emurut Erongot, Robert Mwebaze, Adam Aluma   who were appointed on the Evalaution committee as chair, secretary and member are to serve 13 years,10 years and 21 months respectively  for abuse of office and failure to prevent the said loss.

The judge also sentenced a one Timothy Musherure a consultant with the ministry of Local government to 40 months and barred him from seeking employment in government for aiding and abetting the commission of the above crimes.

While sentencing the 6 officials Justice Bamugemereire said the punishments is to deter other government officials from engaging in corruption.
