One Ugandan is confirmed to have died in yesterday’s attack on a UN van in Somalia.
According to Catherine Ntabadde the Communication Specialist at UNICEF Uganda, Brenda Kyeyune had managed social mobilization and communication initiatives in support of polio eradication in Somalia since 2014.
The attack on the van left 7 people dead who also included two Kenyans and an Afghan national.
The others have been identified as Mr. Payenda Gul Abed, who had been coordinating UNICEF’s polio immunization efforts in Garowe since May 2014. Ms. Woki Munyui, who had been supporting UNICEF’s education work in Somalia since 2007 and Mr. Stephen Oduor, who had been undertaking vital administrative work for UNICEF Somalia since 2010.
Meanwhile UNICEF says it is still studying the situation in Somalia before it thinks of withdrawing its services.
UNICEF regional Chief of Communication James Elder says they are monitoring the security situation in the areas where their staff is working including Garowe.
He says the four injured people have been airlifted to Nairobi for treatment.
Early this after a car bomb exploded outside a popular restaurant in the Somali capital, Mogadishu.
According to the BBC, 11 people have died in the explosion and several others have been seriously injured.
Banooda restaurant is in front of the Central Hotel, which is often frequented by politicians.
Militants from the al-Shabab Islamist group often attack hotels, restaurants and government complexes in the city.
