Uganda is among 23 countries that have achieved exclusive breastfeeding rates above 60 per cent this is according to the Global Breastfeeding Scorecard.

The score card which evaluated 194 nations, found that only 40% of children younger than six months are breastfed exclusively.

On the African continent the other countries include Burundi, Eritrea, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Rwanda, Swaziland and Zambia.

However, according to a new report by UNICEF and the World Health Organization in collaboration with the Global Breastfeeding Collective, no country in the world fully meets recommended standards for breastfeeding,

Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of WHO says breastfeeding gives babies the best possible start in life and works like a baby’s first vaccine.

He however says the lack of investment in breastfeeding results in an estimated 236,000 child deaths per year and US$119 billion in economic losses.

The breast feeding week that kicked off on August first ends tomorrow August 8th 2017.
