Uganda Red Cross Society in partnership with International Red
Cross Society have embarked on constituting Red Cross Action Teams in the border towns of Tororo, Busia and Manafwa to be on standby to respond to any outcome of tomorrow’s elections in neigbouring Kenya.
During an emergency preparedness and response training for Red Cross volunteers in Tororo over the weekend, Paul Okot the Emergency preparedness and response manager said the training was part of the contingency plans to respond to any disaster that might result from the August 8, 2017 elections.
Okot disclosed that already there are people fleeing into Uganda
through the major border towns of Busia, Malaba and Lwakhakha which is an indication that some people may be forced to seek refuge.
He says besides training of volunteers, they are also working with district local governments and Office of Prime minister to secure basic humanitarians needs such as shelter, water, food, free space that may act as a reception and resettlement centre, among others.
