Uganda has been re-elected as a member of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Council for the period; 2023-2026 during the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference taking place in Romania regarding the same. ITU is the United Nations specialized agency for information and communication technologies.
Uganda’s delegation to the conference in Romania which runs till October 14th is led by Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, the Minister for ICT and National Guidance.
According to a statement from the Foreign Affairs ministry, Uganda’s re-election is on account of active engagement and commitment to ITU work.
However, this comes days after the latest Digital Quality of Life Index (DQL) report ranked Uganda at 98th position out of 117 countries in the world regarding digital wellbeing. The DQL also pegged Uganda second last in regards to internet affordability.
Founded in 1865 to facilitate international connectivity in communications networks, ITU allocates global radio spectrum and satellite orbits, develops the technical standards that ensure networks and technologies seamlessly interconnect, and strives to improve access to ICTs to underserved communities worldwide.
The ITU is governed by the Plenipotentiary Conference and the administrative council. The Plenipotentiary Conference is the supreme organ of the Union. It is the decision-making body that determines the direction of the Union and its activities.
