Endless wrangles between suspended Uganda Netball Federation (UNF) president, Sarah Babirye Sarah Babirye Kityo, and Brigadier Flavia Byekwaso ( acting president) have forced the National Council of Sports to withdraw the certificate of recognition from the federation.
In a Wednesday, October 25, 2023, statement, the National Council of Sports chairman stated that the wrangles were reported to the council and the Ministry of Education and Sports two and a half years ago for resolution but the parties have failed to agree.
“The UNF will no longer conduct any business to do with the sport, on behalf of the Government of Uganda,” the statement reads in part.
On September 8 this year, KFM reported that the Federation ousted Flavia Byekwaso from office in a meeting chaired by Sarah Kityo.
The minister of Education and Sports who doubles as the First Lady, Janet Museveni directed Flavia Byekwaso to remain in office as the acting president. She also ordered the NCS not to issue more funding to the Federation until their leadership and governance issues are settled.
As a result, Babirye dragged the Council to court through the Uganda Netball Executive Committee lawyers, Luzige Kavuma and Company Advocates.
While addressing the media yesterday, Babirye revealed that they had nowhere else to go besides court and refuted NCS’ claims against her leadership.
It is upon this background that the National Council of Sports has resolved to withdraw the certificate of recognition that was issued to the federation on June 6, 2016.
