A group of relatives of suspected Buganda rioters has this morning stormed the High Court in Kampala demanding that the suspects be produced in court.
The riots that spread across most parts of Buganda were in protest against the blocking of the Kabaka’s visit to Kayunga district by gov’t citing security reasons.
The 27 suspects, who were arrested in connection with the 2009 September riots that left several people dead and others injured, were meant to be produced in court today for mention of their case.
However, High Court Criminal Registrar Elizabeth Kabanda said that this was not possible due to the huge case backlog.
She says Justice Kameka Mukasa has now adjourned the case to May when a special session will be held for suspects.
Meanwhile, one of the lawyers representing the group Medard Lubega Ssegona has urged the suspects’ relatives who were threatening to get violent to remain calm and allow the court process to go on peacefully.
He also assured relatives of one of the suspects identified as Livingstone Jethrow who recently underwent an operation at Mulago Hospital that he is a stable condition in ward 4 A.
