Hoima residents are in sorrow and grief after ten people died in a grisly accident that occurred along the Hoima-Kaiso-Tonya road.
The deceased were residents of Kiziranfumbi,Kabwooya and Buseruka subcounties in Hoima district.
According to eye witnesses, the victims were traveling on an Isuzu canter, registration number UAM 396V.
The Midwestern regional police spokesperson Ms Lydia Tumushabe said the lorry overturned in Kyenjojo village in Kabwooyasubcounty at about 1.30pm on Tuesday. She identified the deceased as Julius Asaba, 20,a resident of Kyehoro village, Joyce Kaboma,45,a resident of Kyerube village and Farida Kyosaba,18. Also dead is Kwiyocwiny Esther, 26 and her one year old daughter only identified as summer.
Others are Evelyn Kabagambe,30 a resident of Kiziranfumbi subcounty,Christine Kyotamanya,35 a resident of Kaiso fishing village, Joyce Kabwona,45 a resident of Kaiso fishing village and Apiyo,20 a resident of Kaiso and Medard Tumwine,a resident of Kibingo village.
Police said the victims were traveling from Butimba market in Kiziranfumbi subcounty and were heading to Kaiso landing site in Buseruka Sub County.
The Hoima District traffic officer Mr Steven Muhoozi said the accident occurred due to over speeding.
He said traders attempt to evade traffic officials at often move at night from markets when they are overloaded. He said police will intensify operations to crack down errant drivers who are risking their lives and the lives of passengers.
Police transported the bodies of the victims to a mortuary at Hoima regional referral hospital and the three survivors of the accident were admitted at the hospital’s accident and emergence ward.
Relatives of the deceased wailed and wept at the hospital’s mortuary as they awaited postmortem reports from medics.
