Supreme Court Dismisses Cheeye’s Appeal

The Supreme Court has dismissed an appeal filed by Teddy Ssesi Cheeye challenging his conviction and sentence on charges of embezzlement.

The former director of economic monitoring at the Internal Security Organization was found guilty of embezzling by 120 million shillings from the Global Fund by the Anti-Corruption Court.

The then presiding judge Justice John Bosco Kakutis sentenced him to 10 years in jail and also ordered him to pay the 120 million Shillings to Global Fund.

The money was meant for Global Fund activities against HIV/Aids, malaria and tuberculosis in the districts of Kabale, Rukungiri, Mbarara and Ntugangamo.

Cheeye appealed against the judgment and sentence before the Court of Appeal but lost the case before proceeding to the Supreme Court.

In the appeal, Cheeye argued that the trial judge erred in law and convicted him basing on the inadequate evidence.

5 judges of the Supreme Court led by Chief Justice Benjamin Odoki have unanimously dismissed the appeal, in an unprecedented move that saw the case heard and determined within one day.

The judges said they would give reasons for their ruling later.
