“The police do not have powers to stop any rally but rather to provide security,” Amama Mbabazi noted.
This is according to former Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi who has been addressing his first press conference since he publicly declared his intention to contest for presidency.
Mbabazi says that the Public Order Management Act which is said to have been his brain child does not give police any power to regulate meetings.

Mbabazi has also scoffed at those allegedly opposed to his visits to some parts of the country. He continued to ask Ugandans not to be fooled by reports that his candidacy is likely to result into insecurity.
Later this afternoon Mbabazi’s legal team is set to meet with the police to further discuss their client’s planned consultative meetings.
Mbabazi is expected in Mbale on Thursday despite an earlier move by police to block him.
One of Mbabaz’s lawyers Fred Muwema says the police invited them for a meeting scheduled for this afternoon to harmonize the interpretation of the law regarding to Mbabazi’s meetings.

He says he has already informed the police about his intentions to hold consultative meetings starting on Wednesday and police should just offer security.
Mbabazi has also said that the sole candidature project for president Museveni is against the principles that the ruling National Resistance Movement fought for.
