The police have engaged in running battles with angry residents of Rutete, a Kampala suburb along Gayaza road who were protesting over increased load shedding and increased power tariffs.

According to new tariffs that took effect on 15th January, domestic power consumers are set to pay Shs 524.5 per unit compared to the previous Shs 385.6, while commercial consumers pay Shs 487.6 up from Shs 358.6 per unit.

However, the residents argue that the increment was not necessary given that they still suffer frequent power cuts which have greatly affected their businesses.

They had earlier blocked the road leading to Kampala but the anti riot police swung in action dispersing the rowdy crowds.

Police now remains heavily deployed in the area with tear gas trucks seen packed along the roads to quell any further violence.
