Presidential candidates warned against pronouncing themselves as winners

The government has cautioned presidential candidates against any attempts to pronounce themselves winners after next week’s elections.

The caution comes days after the opposition parties agreed to establish a joint tally center to monitor their votes.

Now speaking at a joint media briefing by security chiefs in Kampala, the minister of defense and veteran affairs Adolf Mwesige said only the electoral commission has the constitutional power and mandate to declare final results and announce a winner.

He says security will be on standby to deal with anyone who may want to cause chaos.

He also dismissed reports that the government had plans to harm the family of the National Unity Platform presidential Candidate Robert Kyagulanyi which prompted him to fly his children out of the country.
