President Yoweri Museveni is the Tanzanian city of Arusha for the 17th ordinary summit of the Heads of State scheduled for tomorrow.
The summit is being held under the theme; EAC: Advancing market-driven integration.
The President was received by the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs of Tanzania Agustino Mahiga, Uganda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Sam Kutesa and Uganda’s High Commissioner to Tanzania Dorothy Hyuha.
Top on the agenda of the summit will be the consideration of reports by the EAC Council of Ministers on: the negotiations on the admission of the Republic of South Sudan into the Community; Sustainable Financing Mechanisms for the EAC, and; the EAC Institutional Review.
The Summit will also deliberate on admission of the Republic of Somalia into the bloc.
The Heads of State will also launch the new International East African e-passport during the meeting.
Earlier, however, the Pan African Lawyers’ Union expressed concern that the Burundi crisis is not on the Agenda of the EAC Heads of State Summit despite the worsening situation and request that it be given due priority.
In a joint statement PALU, the Burundian and international civil society organisations, are urging the Summit to ensure implementation of the decisions taken by the three Extraordinary Summits on the situation in Burundi.
They continental lawyers body is also asking the Summit to support the establishment of a credible investigative mechanism to independently investigate all allegations of human rights violations in Burundi.
