At least 85% of Uganda’s disease burden is attributed to poor sanitation and hygiene.
According to the Prime Minister, Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda, most of the disease outbreaks like diarrhoea, cholera, typhoid and scabies are as a result of failure to keep households clean.
Rugunda, who was meeting board of directors of Water Aid International, said the country has incurred excessive costs on these diseases.
The Prime Minister says government has increased access to safe water, currently standing at 72% in urban areas and 64% in rural areas to curb sanitation challenges.
The WaterAid UK Chief Executive Officer Barbara Frost stressed that a good water and sanitation facility was the basis for a sound health care system.
