Police has suspended ‘Boda Boda’ operations for two weeks to enable riders to meet the set requirements.
The decision follows numerous complaints from various stake holders and boda boda associations accusing police of conducting the operation without sensitizing them.
Addressing journalists at the Central Police Station, Dr Stephen Kasiima the Director Traffic says riders should be able to acquire permits, 3rd party insurance and helmets among other requirements within the two weeks.
“Within this period we hope these riders we have processed some of the necessary requirements such as clearing third party and PSV,” Dr Kasiima said while addressing the media at Central Police Station.
Although it is the mandate of National Roads Safety Council (NRSC) to sensitise drivers, Mr Kasiima said they are going to use the two weeks amnesty to educate motorists since majority complained that they had not been educated.
Dr Kasiima and Mr Norman Musinga, the Kampala Metropolitan traffic police commander, said over 10,000 motorcycles had been impounded in on week in areas of Kampala, Entebbe, Wakiso and Mukono.
“We have impounded more than 10000 motorcycles. Of these very few have been cleared to go back on the road. We have so far collected Shs98m from the fines and other clearances,” Mr Musinga said.

“We have noticed that many motorcycles have forged number plates and forged documents. We therefore call upon whoever lost a motorcycle to crosscheck with us,” Mr Musinga urged.
The duo said they had registered no any accident during the clampdown and traffic flow had greatly improved because drivers and other motorists where respecting traffic regulations.
He adds that the operation has reduced traffic congestion in the city as well as accidents involving motorcyclists.
