Opposition vows on protest rallies

| January 19, 2012

Kampala Woman MP Nabilah Nagayi has vowed to continue with her planned rally this afternoon despite heavy deployment of the police.

The police surrounded her home earlier this morning but she managed to escape.

The police was also deployed near the home of the FDC Leader Col. Kizza Besigye and at the home of the FDC women leader Ingrid Turinawe in Gayaza.

Nabilah Sempala now says the rally will be held at the Katwe Play ground.

She says the rally is part of her work as a Member of Parliament and not an attempt to overthrow the government.

The opposition Activists for Change announced fresh protests dubbed “Walk- to- Work Reloaded” which will include holding rallies countrywide instead of simply walking to work as was the case before.

The A4C coordinator, Matthias Mpuuga says the campaign will begin with rallies, sensitizing the masses on the economic situation and what their social and economic rights are.

However, police spokesman Asuman Mugenyi says there are international visitors expected and such rallies cannot be allowed now.

The Police have also explained the heavy deployment all over the country, saying is meant to avert any occurrence of violence.

In Kampala, heavy police presence is seen around Nakawa, along Jinja Road and the city center.

Some police officers are seen armed with long sticks and batons.
