Police Denies Arming Crime Preventers

The police have dismissed reports that crime preventers have been armed in preparation for the February general elections.

This followed unconfirmed claims from the civil society that some crime preventers have been sighted moving with guns which they say is illegal.

The police spokesperson Fred Enanga however says no crime preventer has access to firearms because they were not trained to handle guns, but rather to volunteer criminal related information to the police.

He explains that according to the 2016 Security Master Plan, the force has  150,000 trained officers ready to be deployed.

But in a rather contradictory statement, Justice and Constitutional Affairs minister Kahinda Otafire said yesterday that there was nothing wrong with arming crime preventers.
