Uganda’s Parliament will hold a special session on Monday, March 3, 2025, to honor women and commemorate International Women’s Day, which is celebrated globally on March 8th.
Speaker of Parliament Anita Among announced this on Tuesday, stating that women from across the country will be selected to participate in the session. They will convene in the parliamentary chambers to debate issues of importance to women.
The Speaker also indicated that the parliamentary celebration will precede the national celebrations, which are planned to take place in Kyankwanzi.
She added that the upcoming Monday session will be the second special women’s sitting, and it will be presided over by a woman chosen from the attendees.
“We are going to invite our women from districts to come and have interactions with honourable members and discuss issues concerning women,” Among said on Tuesday.
Soroti City Woman MP Joan Acom urged the Speaker to direct the government to allow opposition women MPs to organize their own Women’s Day celebrations in their respective areas. She pointed out that last year, security agencies prevented opposition women MPs from holding celebrations in their home districts.
