The opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) has been forced to adjust its program for the Buganda region mobilization meetings, cancelling the first that had been scheduled for Mukono Municipality today.
This is after the police advised the NUP leaders that the venues that had initially been booked were not convenient.
According to the NUP leader, Robert Kyagulanyi, the party meeting shall instead be held tomorrow, another will be at Recreation Grounds in Masaka on Friday May 31st, before the party leaders head to Mityana at Busimbi Division Grounds on Tuesday June 4th.
“The Police claimed that the venues we had initially booked are not convenient, even when other political groups have NATIONAL been using them. They even declined us using the Liberation Square in Masaka YAGU City which has been hosting most SSENTAMU ROBERT political events.
Anyway, in the greater interest of ensuring that our events happen successfully, we have made these adjustments and secured new venues”, he said a post on X.
In a statement, Claire Nabakka, the police deputy spokesperson, a meeting between the police and the NUP leadership held at Naguru yesterday resolved among other things; that the NUP should in all its notifications, write officially to the IGP early as per the law to allow UPF management to reply in time
The meeting also urged NUP leadership to prevail over their members who wear military attire as these acts contravene the law.
“The NUP Leadership will provide a liaison officer whose role will be to coordinate with Police Headquarters and Unit Commanders regarding preparations for holding their activities and following up on security concerns from the party”, ACP Nabakka says in the statement.
