Uganda has only 28 orthopedic surgeons serving the population of over 33 million people.
Health minister Dr. Rukahana Rugunda says this has made many people with different fracture complication miss out on treatment and resort to traditional medicine.
Rugunda says a number of the regional hospitals do not even have a single orthopedic surgeon yet patients in urgent need of them are many.
He says if the country could have at least 100 orthopedics they would help address the burden of fracture problems.
In a related development the accident and emergency Unit at Mulago referral hospital is overwhelmed due to the increasing number of patients.
The acting head of the Unit Alexandra Bagirana says daily close to 200 patients are registered with varing fracture complications daily.
