Mr Taremwa Jassy, a 28-year-old official from the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) office on Lumumba Avenue, was arraigned before the Buganda Road Magistrates Court on Monday and remanded to Luzira Prison for soliciting and receiving a bribe.
Jassy is accused of obtaining money by false pretense. He allegedly solicited and received Shs250,000 from one Mr Bamwagala Michael on January 30, 2025, promising to expedite the replacement of his lost national identity card within a week.
Bamwagala, suspecting corruption, reported the incident to the State House Anti-Corruption Unit.
The court heard that Bamwagala had initially paid for a replacement ID at the NIRA Kololo office but had not received it. He then went to the NIRA Lumumba Avenue office and approached Jassy, who told him he needed to pay an additional Shs250,000 to fast-track the process.
Jassy was arrested on January 30, 2025, after Bamwagala filed a complaint with the State House Anti-Corruption Unit.
