Uganda Prisons Service authorities have been warned against redundancy during the ongoing World Cup tournament period that might expose prisons to attacks and prisoners’ escape.
The Prisons Service has further reminded prison administrators of the steady increase in attacks on security personnel that have led to loss of lives and theft of guns.
Frank Baine, the Commissioner/spokesperson of the Prisons Service says directives have been sent to all concerned authorities to be on alert with the World Cup excitement to avoid any repercussions.
“The commencement of the World Cup tournament and its excitement may result into prisoners’ escape and theft of guns since there is a steady increase of attacks on security personnel leading to loss of lives and theft of guns in case staff is not on alert,” Baine said.
“Staff must report on duty without phones for they will distract the attention and interference with the level of alertness.’ he said.
Prison authorities have also been implored to enhance the security of prisoners to and from courts, hospitals, and labor. The safety of guns must be taken as a top priority, according to Baine.
