The Uganda National Examination Board has expressed readiness to set examinations for the newly approved Kiswahili language should the Ministry of education roll it out.
The Executive Director Uneb, Daniel Odongo says that the board has been examining the Swahili Language at O’level and A ‘level for several years hence the syllabus is already available.
He says now that it has been made compulsory, they will just incur extra costs printing extra papers now that all students will be offering it as well as an additional cost for marking the papers.
He however said that the only new thing is bringing Primary Schools on board since the language has not been examinable at this level.
He says that once the government develops the curriculum for Swahili language for primary education, they shall go ahead and prepare the exams for this level just like they have been doing with English language.
Swahili language has been among the many languages offered by a number of students at both O’level and A ‘level. It was however optional to those who wanted to offer it.
Kiswahili now becomes the second language in the country after English.
