The Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) Chairperson Justice Mariam Wangadya, has condemned businesses over alleged human rights violations across the country.
Justice Wagadya says this has been on several occasions witnessed through underpayment, child labour, and displacement of people among others.
Speaking at the 5th annual symposium on business and human rights at Sheraton Hotel in Kampala today, Wangadya said the most vulnerable are women and persons with disabilities, among others.
She has also urged government to boost the commission’s funding to adequately execute its duties.
“Businesses have had a negative impact on the enjoyment of human rights… to effectively execute our mandate, I take this opportunity to urge the government to adequately fund the Commission,” she said.
This year’s annual symposium is celebrated under the theme, “Accessing Uganda’s journey in access to justice for business and human rights”.
