The Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga has called for concerted efforts to ensure social and economic rights are given the attention they deserve if the quality life of Ugandans is to improve.
Kadaga says the country still has a long way to go because more attention has been given to political rights while social rights like the right to decent housing have been ignored.
She says social and economic rights need to be both respected and urgently addressed in terms of budgeting and policies.
The speaker’s call comes after the third quarterly report on the state of law in Uganda revealed that government has completely ignored social and economic rights like that on attainable standards of health and the right to fair payment and work without discrimination.
