By Benjamin Jumbe:
Opposition members of parliament on the legal and parliamentary affairs committee have described President Yoweri Museveni’s remarks on the age limit as diversionary.
While meeting members of the committee on Tuesday night, the president said that having age limits for any elective office goes against Article 1 of the 1995 Constitution, which says “Power belongs to the people.”
Citing cases of the US, China, Russia and Israel, among others, President Museveni explained that many of these countries, in their push to develop and transform, had been guided by leaders who were of advanced age and led the countries for decades.
However speaking to KFM, Masaka Municipality MP Matthias Mpuuga who is also a member of the committee but snubbed the meeting, said the president cannot compare Uganda to those countries because the history of these countries is different.
He adds that together with other colleagues who snubbed the Entebbe meet, they plan to present a minority report.
