Government has ordered all Public Universities non-teaching staff to report for duty with immediate effect.
This is after negotiations with government over salary increment hit a stalemate.
The States Minister for Education in charge of science and technology, Prof Sandy Tickodri – Togboa, has written through the respective university council chairpersons ordering that the universities be opened and warned to take disciplinary measures on those who fail to report for work.
There are close to 4,000 administrative and support staff from six public universities of Mbarara, Makerere, Busitema, Gulu, Kyambogo and Muni.
They declared their strike on August 3, a week to the opening of the new academic year.
In his letter, Prof Tickodri – Togboa argued that government has already committed to enhance salaries for non-teaching staff next financial year and pay them arrears that will have accrued in the current budget.
However, the non teaching staff association Chair person,Jackson Betihamah, chairman says they will not report unless government honors our demand for 31bn in salary enhancement.
