The newly sworn in Electoral Commission has asked members of parliament on the Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee to ask the finance ministry to revise the commissioners’ salaries that has not been revised for the last 18 years.
While appearing before this committee, the commission chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama says this is unfair given the ever changing economic situation.
In the next financial, the commission requested for Sh123 bn but to their dismay only Sh41bn is reflected in Budget Framework Paper creating a funding gap of Sh82 bn.
Justice Byabakama adds that the commission also requested for 3.3 billion for voter education, but only 300 million was approved, leaving a funding gap of Sh3bn.
