President Yoweri Museveni has directed the Minister for Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), Minsi Kabanda to probe claims of unlawful charges in markets.
According to a letter dated October 2, 2022, addressed to Kabanda, Museveni says it came to his attention that over 400,000 market vendors in government-owned markets in Kampala are being charged multiple charges.
He notes that some vendors who had been given lease to run the markets such as Gaba market have hijacked the ownership and even scheming to steal the land titles.
Following the comlaints, President has directed Kabanda to come up with a cabinet paper on how best to manage public markets and to also clarify on how best to collect charges.
Currently, there are about 16 government markets in KCCA with over 400,000 vendors, and they include; Usafi, Owino, Wandegeya, Kisseka, Gaba, and Bugolobi markets among others.
