Researchers at Makerere University have developed an innovative music, dance, and drama model designed to help teachers in lower secondary schools teach mathematics, with the aim of improving learners’ performance.
The Principal Investigator, Dr Sylvia Antonia Nakimera said that after establishing that despite all the efforts that have been put in place by the government, learners continue to perform poorly in mathematics.
She noted that the above forced them to conduct a study to establish the above trend, so that they come up with some solutions to compliment the government efforts.
Among the findings was that teachers were teaching learners mathematics after lunch when they are exhausted as well as using the same method of teaching which she said are a bit boring to learners.
She also explained that some teachers were not well versed with how to deliver the teaching of the subject under the new lower secondary curriculum.
It is against the above background that the researchers developed a music, dance and drama tool that teachers can employ to teach their learners.
The use of music to teach learners according to her, will help learners enjoy learning, but also easily remember what they have been taught.
