New charges slapped on Besigye

| May 18, 2011

The FDC Party President Col. Kizza Besigye has been charged before Kasangati Magistrate’s Court with four fresh cases, arising from the Walk to Work protests.

He was first charged alongside 7 others with holding unlawful assemblies at various places between Kasangati and Mulago roundabout to cause fear and breach of peace.

Besigye pleaded not guilty to the charges that arise from the April 28th events, that saw him brutally arrested. Besigye had run-ins with the police on the fateful day as they tried to direct his convoy through routes which he refused to take.

After a standoff that lasted several hours along the Gayaza road, he was arrested at Wandegeya in an incident that saw his car windows smashed while Besigye and others in his car had pepper spray splashed on them.

He was taken to Court but was too weak to take plea, prompting the magistrate to release him.

He has been released on bail of 5million shillings not cash and his sureties included Tororo county MP Geofrey Ekanya and FDC Vice President for Buganda region Sam Njuba.

Three fresh charges arising from the various protests in the Walk to Work to campaign were also introduced.

The three include committing a traffic offense and holding unlawful assemblies, all of which he denied. Magistrate James Eremye Mawanda advised the prosecution to speed up investigations for the hearing of the various cases to begin.

Besigye’s lawyers included David Mpanga and Ernest Kalibala. The FDC Leader will now have a busy schedule attending to the various cases in Court as he is expected before the Kasangati Court on the 13th and 16th of June while he will be required before the Nabweru Court on 15th June.
