Museveni welcomes East African Afcon bid

Ritah Kemigisa | May 23, 2023

President Museveni has received Uganda’s joint bid to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) alongside neighbors Kenya and Tanzania.

Dubbed the EAC pamoja bid, the three countries will tussle it out with three other bidders that include; Algeria, Botswana, and Egypt.

For any Nation to host the AFCON, it must have six standard sports grounds but in case of a joint bid, which Uganda opted for alongside Kenya and Tanzania, each of the countries is required to have at least three.

In a tweet, Museveni commended East Africa for coming together to invite the African Cup of Nations, saying it is a good gesture that will promote both countries and also boost tourism.

“While in sports, you learn to coordinate your body better, just like the parade in the army. And to coordinate a group. You develop the spirit of determination. You push yourself even when you are tired. You learn not to take the easy way,” Museveni said on Monday.

Museveni says supporting sports is good for health, entertainment, and business.

The Confederation of African Football has since set May 23 as the deadline for member associations to submit their final bids.
