President Yoweri Museveni is at Namugongo Martyrs’ shrine for special prayers in honor of former Tanzanian president the Late Julius Nyerere.
The beatification prayers are being led by the arch Bishop of Kampala Cyprian Kizito Lwanga as the first step for one to become a saint.
Also in attendance is the widow Maria Nyerere and several senior government officials.
Meanwhile, the police insist that no cooking or vending of food along the roads that lead to Namugongo shrine as it has been the case during the previous martyrs’ day celebrations.
The Police Commander Kampala Metropolitan region Andrew Kaweesi says this is being done to ensure total security during and after the celebrations.
Hundreds of Christians continue to throng the Martyrs’ shrines in Namugongo ahead of the Uganda Martyrs’ Day celebrations.
The day is marked every 3rd of June in remembrance of the 22 Catholic and protestant Christians who were killed for their faith by Kabaka Mwanga.
