President Museveni has directed the Minister of Water and Environment, Sam Cheptoris Munghaso to swiftly work out modalities of extending safe and clean water to villages in the Mityana District that are currently water-stressed.
In a letter dated February 2022, Mr. Museveni said he had received information that about 120 villages in Mityana District, out of 720 villages, do not have a clean water source like a borehole or a stand water pipe which puts their lives at risk of contracting water-borne diseases like cholera and typhoid.
The letter reads, “I am, therefore, directing you to work with Hon Nabakooba[Judith ], minister of lands to rectify this. The policy of the NRM is all the 70,000 villages of Uganda should, as of now, have at least one good source of water and the plan is that more sources per village should be created in the coming years so that people do not have to line up for water.”
Aisha Sekindi the state minister for water said the commissioner of rural water is handling the whole process. She adds that they’re not going to consider all those villages addressed in the letter due to limited funds.
The lands minister Judith Nabakooba says they are waiting for the budget to see how they are going to phase it out.
